I did it - I spent part of my SSIA on "I can do it"

At the end of October, I went to the Hayhouse "I can do it" conference in Orlando, Florida. I had decided this would be the "blow" bit of my SSIA.  Yes, I will be sensible with the rest but this was pure joy and self-indulgence...and worth every penny!

Hayhouse is an organisation devoted to personal development. It was founded by Louise Hay. It's about positivity, energy and acknowledging the existence of a world beyond the 5 senses. They have a radio station and you can download broadcasts at www.hayhouseradio.com

I had never been to the States before and found myself intrigued by the differences and similarities. The first thing that struck me was the universal unhelpfulness of airport staff...what is it with people working in an airport retail setting? It seems to be a job requirement to be surly and unhelpful...mumbling also seems to be highly desired.

I found it rather disconcerting to have airport announcements on levels of terror alert (orange when I was there). No one seemed to be able to tell me what moved the terror level up and down. There were no queues at Dublin airport...but two of them at Philadelphia. One thing that really struck me was the almost uncanny similarity between the Philadelphia sky and the opening credits of the Simpsons...surreal or what?

Anyway, what about the conference? It was fantastic..I went specifically to see Cheryl Richardson (a coach I have admired for a long time) and she was terrific. The workshop presented by Abraham-Hicks was inspirational. There was also a past life regression workshop which was interesting...when I did the exercise I was a young handsome male commander in the 16th century.....no sniggering please.. particularly from those of you who  know me!

Of course I met two people from Ireland there (in a queue for food) and then through them linked up with some of the locals and people from Scotland and Australia. I had absolutely no expectation about who I would meet here...it just happened in a delightful synchronistic way....and was a reminder to me yet again of the importance of staying relaxed and trusting inspiration as much as perspiration...these people are inspirational. I plan to stay in touch with them all.

Some of the speakers did not touch me. The whole world of the psychic medium does not appeal to me...but maybe that's because no one really close to me has ever died...However Suze Orman was fire personified on the subject of money....she takes no prisoners and I loved her blazing full-on style.

Many of us giggled at the idea of coming out of the spiritual closet...and there was a lot of us there...over 3,000. A speaker asked the audience had they made any friends...and over 90% said they had. If you want to have a holiday with a difference, inspire yourself, meet terrific new people and come out of the spiritual closet...check out the next conferences...to be held in Las Vegas and Toronto.

What could do with your SSIA to inspire and nurture yourself?

Guest Slot

This month the guest slot is from an illustrator called Gabrielle Izen. Gabrielle does quirky, individual illustrations and e-cards. I just want to confirm what Gabrielle says about her business philosophy...she is a delight to deal with...and this is why I am happy to endorse her work.

When Anne asked me to write a piece for her newsletter, I thought that the best approach was to be as authentic as possible. There's so much hard sell these days that I want to promote and emphasise the fact that I'm an ethical business-woman working with simple philosophies doing something I love.

Most of my working life has been spent within the publishing and media industries as an illustrator and newspaper designer. When I lost my highly stressful design job in 2003, I decided that I wanted a life that was more balanced, creative and fulfilling.

In all the discussions that followed about what I should do next, my youngest brother suggested I create an animated e-cards service. I was hugely privileged to have been taught illustration by Quentin Blake, and his animated, light drawings have always influenced my style. Having created greetings cards and stationery; both individual items and ranges, the e-cards idea seemed the next step. So with lots of hard work, many late nights and with much support from family and friends, we launched GabrielleIzen.com in January 2004; http://www.gabrielleizen.com

I provide a bespoke gifts service for both corporate and private clients as well. I use traditional methods to create both the gifts and e-cards; handmade papers from Italy, dip-pen and ink, gold-leaf, water colour paints. I specialise in creating unique and beautiful gifts for many different events, tailored to the client’s exact requirements and timeframe. I also create bespoke e-cards and email greetings cards.

Products include:

My business philosophy is simple run on principles that are important to me and reflect my values; courtesy, respect, awareness to name but a few. In my own life, as well as my business, I value customer service and want my clients to feel special and for my business to grow through recommendation.

For every membership gift you give, I will give you a year's membership for free.

Bits & Pieces - Carbon Neutral

As I flew back from the States and also as I am flying more than I ever have...I find myself feeling twinges of guilt around the impact of this travel on global warming...particularly in the light of the warnings we are receiving from Stern's report and Al Gore's "An inconvenient truth". A friend of mine send me a link to Carbon Neutral  website...

Catch me when I fall by Nicci French.

I have  a fear of mental illness and this book is an interesting exploration of it...from inside and out. And proof that having paranoia doesn't mean they are not out to get you...

Sacred Contracts by Caroline Myss: I've only recently begun to be interested in the work of Caroline Myss. She works around archetypes and more recently has been developing workshops around the idea of "mystics without a monastery" taking the work of Teresa of Avila as a starting point.
