Battling bad moods - resistance is futile!
During August I felt really tired and I tried the usual things to get myself out of it...going for a walk (although with our Irish "summer", that was pretty limited!), reading a book, telling myself I "should" be doing something...but the reality was that the house was becoming a spider colony, dishes were piling up in the sink, a room we are planning to renovate was still in chaos and I still felt tired. I had tried doing only small things...but I felt as though I didn't have the juice for even those...
So I decided to do something else. I had recently been reading Martha Beck's work (www.marthabeck.com ) and she talked about the "Wild child" side..and I wondered what would happen if I indulged this "wild child" side. So I made a conscious decision that for a week, I wouldn't do anything I thought I "should" do. I'd give the spiders an amnesty, stay in bed late, read some of my beloved crime fiction, watch some favourite TV series and give the whole self-improvement thing a rest. Now can I say as a self-employed person (and all you entrepreneurs out there will identify with this!) I found this surprisingly difficult. Part of me felt quite...dare I say it naughty!
I then had to go to Finland for a few days (end of a project I was involved in..more about that later) and I found the whole process really relaxing. I realised that like a lot of self-employed people I had been letting my brain get clogged with work stuff - so that even when I was out of the office, my brain wasn't. I was spending time worrying about stuff instead of doing it and it was mentally exhausting me! There is something oddly soothing about airports for me. It's sort of a hiatus place where unless you bring a laptop, you don't really have to *do* anything...The time in Finland was good too..although the weather was rather too similar to Ireland!
Even though I didn't have a major break per se, I felt very energised when I came home and launched a major assault on my arachnid friends when I came home...what I did learn from the whole thing was the following:
- My bad mood and low energy was actually telling me something...it was telling me I needed to mentally switch off and that I need to build that into my life. I noticed that I had been sort of dithering. When I was working I was letting myself get distracted by busy work and not getting progress on projects that I really want to work on. Then when I was "resting" I was fretting about work stuff. So now, I have been identifying what I really need to do to move projects forward and doing the busy work (which does actually have to get done sometime!) as a break exercise.
- What Karen Vizer calls do-do can be very seductive...it's so easy to confuse our brains into thinking that doing something is better than anything (and at times it is...it's only when it gets to be a habit that it's a problem!)
- Time expands to fill. My intention now is to focus on doing the stuff that progresses what I want to do...and then to STOP and switch off.
Take action or not!
- Is there an aspect of your life where stopping and stepping back would be of real benefit?
- What are you afraid will happen if you do?
- What will happen if you don't?
- What are your moods trying to tell you? If it was a person what would it be like? Could you have a dialogue with it?
Now What coaching? - Week 2 - With every gain there is a loss.
I thought for fun...that over the next 12 months I would outline the steps in the Now What process...and you can even play with it yourself if you choose..In Week 1...the focus was on getting clear about what you HATE about your current situation...In Week 2, "With every gain there is a loss". This is about saying goodbye to your current situation and identifying what you can take with you e.g. skills, life lessons. It's what Laura calls "Mourn the package". She also suggests that you design your ideal day (why not have a go at that and see what elements you can incorporate this week!)
Have fun!
Consciousness shifting
This work is both very systematic and intuitive. Its fundamental plank is
kinesiology (using the body as a compass...know your gut feeling?..it's there
for a reason!) . I'm often genuinely humbled and delighted by the benefits
people get..although there are people it just doesn't suit...and hey, that's
fine too! Different strokes for different folks!
I'm still offering to all readers of this newsletter

1 short session with Anne helped me to make incredible progress. For many
years I had felt this awful fear and it was getting me down. I had tried so
much to clear it and I felt trapped as nothing had worked. Intuitively I
knew it was stopping me enjoy life, stopping me be successful and worst of
all, stopping me be who I want to be.
Anne led me through an easy process that, first, gave me powerful confidence
that we had got to the heart of a problem. She then communicated with my
body to find how to clear the block in a way I certainly cannot do. At the
end of an easy an enjoyable 40 minutes process she told me it was complete.
Though it took a few days, I realised I was enjoying life again- that the
fear, which had been my constant companion for many years, had gone!
I would recommend Anne to anyone who wants to make progress in their lives,
to become more of who they want to be and to clear things that are holding
them back. Jane Bromley (Jbromley@strategenic.co.uk)

Stars under the Cobblestones - multi-cultural skills for teachers and trainers. (www.unec.eu.com )
As I mentioned in the piece above, this project has come to an end. However, it has won two European prizes:
Example of best practice for evaluation:
"One key factor helping the project team to achieve what it has achieved, was and is the innovative Evaluation approach used in the project. Instead of a split of external and internal evaluators, UNEC has formed an evaluation team composed of two internal and one external evaluator, who are working together as a team, ensuring that the external evaluator is fully informed about the project advancements and shortcomings, while the internal evaluators always have a neutral opinion as a reference point. This innovative approach has caught the attention of the experts reviewing the progress report of UNEC, which by the way has been approved almost without further recommendations"
Bronze award for Mobility!
Get Perspective – Mobility broadens Horizons" was the motto of the conference in June 2008 under the Slovenian presidency. Mobility within the Lifelong Learning Programme contributes substantially to bringing this motto to life and to giving an additional impetus to creativity and innovation in the European Education Area.
During this conference outstanding mobility activities from the European programmes Comenius, Erasmus, Leonardo da Vinci, Grundtvig and Languages were honoured. For each category the three best projects were presented with an award.
UNEC has been considered as a “best practice” in mobility and received a bronze Lifelong Learning Award during a ceremony held on 13 June 2008 in Ljubljana-Slovenia.
This course is ideal for people who find themselves working as teachers/trainers in a multicultural environment and want to learn quickly how to work more effectively in that environment. You will leave the course with a toolbox of exercises which you can implement immediately and clear steps on how you can work more effectively with multi-cultural groups. You will also gain exposure to one of Europe's lesser known languages!
If you wish to attend this course and avail of grant funding, apply to your local national agency before 30th September (In Ireland, this is www.leargas.ie ) for the first 2009 course in Bad Aussee (Austria) (27th March - 1st April 2009). There is a course running in Belgium (Blankensee) from 14th - 19th November but grant funding applications has closed for that. You can apply for a place at www.unec.eu.com
Recommended - what I'm reading/watching
Movies - The Big Blue/Jesus of Montreal: As part of my August wind down I dug out some old movies I hadn't watched for a while. It was such a treat. The Big Blue is one of Luc Besson's earliest movies (he's the director of The Fifth Element) and is a wonderful inspirational movie about the sea, friendship, love and loss. Jesus of Montreal on the other hand is about a group of motley actors who are asked to "re-invent" the Passion for a church in Montreal. They do this but the results are rather more than the authorities bargained for. Watch out for the sequence in which they do "The passion" in method acting style!
The Six Wives of Henry VIII by Antonia Fraser: I haven't been watching the TV series The Tudors on TV3, but this is the historical version. It tells the story of these remarkable women (Divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived) and their connection with that rather nasty piece of work: Henry VIII. The book is a great read but also is a solid piece of history.
Hitler's Irishmen by Terence O'Reilly: OK, let me first of all nail my colours to the mast here...Terence is my cousin. But don't hold that against him! However, this is a great piece of historical research about two Irishmen who joined Hitler's Waffen SS. It also has some really interesting stuff about the IRA - German connection of World War II.
