Give up your auld story for Lent
All of us have stories: families have stories. Let me give you an example of a story. In a family recently a brother and sister had a fight. As usual, it was in the wrong place (another family gathering) and wrong time (Christmas). Everyone had a story about what happened. For some it was the build up of old stuff. For one person it was the culmination of lots of perceived/intended insults. For another it was the sister's planned malicious intention to insult her brother. People blamed the family of the brother...why did they make him come (usually the same people who would have been critical if he hadn't come...). People commented on the story. It's done the rounds many times. What's the reality? The fight upset everyone including the people concerned.
Let me tell you another story: about a woman who believed that she was pre-destined to be "fat and ugly". She believed that she would never meet anyone, that men only liked thin, pretty women (preferably not too bright). The idea of any man seeing her with no clothes on filled her with disgust. In fact she "knew" that he would run out the door. Even the presence of an overweight friend who was the biggest man-magnet she knew did not change this story...of course it was different for her. She didn't "see" this evidence. So as a result, she didn't notice the men who wanted to spend time with her ("they only saw her as a friend"). All she saw was the men in nightclubs whose eyes quickly flicked over her and dismissed her as a "dog".
Last month I attended a consciousness shifting workshop (visit www.karenvizer.com for more information) as I probably annoyed you with! <g>. I had the chance to meet one of my readers there as well..thanks Linda! Thanks for your patience! It was terrific...it's a very interesting experience to dig up stories and old beliefs, throw them up on a flipchart and let go of them. I'm very taken with this work to the extent that I'm probably going to train in the work and learn to help other people toss out their stories as well. I still have quite a few stories to dig out...but what has been interesting for me is watching the shifts I've had in various relationships...the growing freedom...the ability to notice behaviour and be compassionate towards the person. I include myself in this by the way.
One of the things I've really wanted to do this year is eat according to my body, not emotionally...last week, I got upset about something and my reaction was to go to the fridge and pull up a chair <g>. Now, I didn't go to the fridge but I did tuck into a packet of teacakes! But the difference is that I stopped earlier than I would and refused to beat myself up about it...(usually I would beat myself up about the first layer and then feel so sorry for myself that I would eat the second layer...anyone else recognise this? <g>

So, what's your story and who would you be without it?

Stars under the Cobblestones: multicultural skills for teachers and trainers...
There are still some places left on this course due to begin 9th March. If you work in a multi-cultural environment (and I bet you know someone who does!) this is a great opportunity to really learn more effectively on how to work with people from a different cultural background. It's going to be fun, varied, with lots of opportunities to mix with people from different cultures, develop your networks. There's a special price for Irish participants as well:
I'd love to meet you there...
Bits & Pieces - Brain Surgeon required - really!
If anyone you know where I would even begin with this...I'd love some advice. I had a contact from a friend of mine in Cameroon. An acquaintance of hers got shot (or got shrapnel/bullets) lodged in her brain. She's now having fits/blackouts and her family are very worried. The operation can't be done in Cameroon so we're seeing how it could be done in Europe. My first question was if it was a scam (I checked with the contact and she sent me medical records which seem genuine). So any suggestions from you as to how I find and price brain surgery....would be much appreciated!
Recommended - what I'm reading/listening to
I've loved Gill Edwards' work since I first read her book: Stepping into the Magic. This is a deeply moving book about the breakup of her marriage and her move towards "wild Love". As always, honest, vulnerable and wise...well worth checking out.
This is the latest book by the author of "The Power of Now"..which can be hard going at times (personally I prefer the recordings: that hypnotic northern European monotone...)
This is much more accessible. He talks about his own life and the strategies of the ego: complaining, being a victim, roleplaying, the need to feel superior. His thesis is that there is an explosion of consciousness on the planet...
I've recently had a TG binge (thanks Easons for your 3 for 2 promotion!). The writing is good, the plots are tight and it keeps the reader interested...Life Support was particularly gruesome (there's a good bit about genetic modification!). But if you like tight crime thrillers...check her out.
I've become a real fan of podcasting...great for commuting. This is a website where I heard a great interview with the founders of Fast company. Small business podcast
